Two suicide bombers tried to demolish the police headquarters building in the major southern city on Sunday. The attack killed two police men and wounded 29 officers and 8 civilians. One of the two bombers damaged the second floor of the building and could have killed the provincial police chief and the regional chief of the Border Guard.

There have been only three months since the jailbreak attack made by the Taliban who helped 900 prisoners escape. A Taliban spokesman claimed responsibility for the attacks as they have not once exposed the weakness of the Afghan government and police forces.

The Kandahar’s police station was the victim of another bombing attack in 2006, but the officials have now guarded it with barriers and high-blast protective walls. Gen. Rahmatullah Raufi, the provincial governor, went to the hospital to visit the wounded people from yesterday’s attack.

He stated that the authorities have released an investigation on the bombing attack which happened at about 1 p.m. after the border police chief Abdul Raziq had arrived with several guards. Ahmad, 28, a criminal investigation officer who uses only one name said that he was “sitting in the office when suddenly a powerful blast shook the building.”

“The first blast was not so strong, but the second one was so powerful I was blown off my chair and injured my head,” the criminal investigation officer added.

Even if the police building was badly damaged after the explosion, none of the injured policemen or civilians have their life in danger, as the provincial police chief Matiullah Qati stated.
