Kosovo’s Status to Be Determined Four Months from Now
Kosovo will have to wait another four months in order to find out its political status after Russia and Serbia strongly opposed the draft proposed by the United Nations.

UN members are currently trying to work out a compromise solution that would finally resolve Kosovo’s identity crisis. The Security Council is considering a new round of discussions with Russian and Serbian representatives in the following 120 days, or a plan proposed by UN’s special envoy Martti Ahtisaari would come into effect.

This plan grants Kosovo its long-desired independence, but under international supervision. Any kind of independence doesn’t please Belgrade officials, who said they will only agree with a special autonomy.

Renewed talks between Russia, China, France, Britain and the United States are due to take place in order to establish a new draft that would get Kremlin’s vote also.

Previously, Moscow threatened it will use its veto right to sink any draft that would propose Kosovo’s autonomy. In order for a UN resolution to be approved in this case, all five states have to give their thumbs up, but after Russia made public its support for Serbia’s cause the negotiations took an new turn.

If UN’s draft indeed comes into action, Kosovo would be granted a provisory independence under international guardianship. That means an international representative will be appointed in the breakaway province in order to monitor the progress made in several imbalanced sectors and provide assistance if needed.

Also, the peacekeeping force will continue its mission, but with the local authorities in the driver’s seat. All these measures would be kept until Kosovo consolidates as a democratic state.

The outcome of these six-way talks are surely to be interesting, with Russia and Serbia on one side and the rest of UN members on the other, trying to convince the two to accept "the inevitable"- Kosovo’s independence.
