Some Cereals in U.S. Jump Over 50% Sugar

Consumer Reports stated on Wednesday that some cereals made in the U.S. contain sugar in half of their entire percentage. Still, many of the companies which market the cereals put only the fair scores on nutritional value. The agency tracked 11 popular cereals which disobeyed the corresponding sugar value. Among them, Kellogg's Honey Smacks has as much sugar as a doughnut.

Some other companies which produce cereals have more sugar and sodium increase the sugar value only for the products sold in the U.S., not for the ones sold in other countries. Post Golden Crisp made by Kraft Foods Inc and Kellogg's Honey Smacks contain more than 50% sugar and nine other brands contain almost 40% sugar.

According to the research made by Consumer Reports, the healthiest cereals are Cheerios, Kix and Honey Nut Cheerios, all made by General Mills, and Life, made by Pepsico Inc's Quaker Oats. Gayle Williams, deputy editor of Consumer Reports Health, advised the consumers: “Be sure to read the product labels, and choose cereals that are high in fiber and low in sugar and sodium.”

The agency discovered that 91 children with ages between 6 and 16 ate their cereal without knowing that they actually consume nearly 60% more sugar than advised for their age. The Consumers International will ask World Health Organization to release international guidelines which will contain foods high in sugar, fat or sodium for children.
