There was a mixed reaction Tuesday to the agreement with football's governing body FIFA with Polish sports officials that ensured Poland could play in two upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

Poland's Sports Minister, Miroslaw Drzewiecki, has tried to present himself as the victor in the stand-off, telling Polskie Radio that "the war is not yet over".

However, members of the ruling coalition party Civic Platform (PO) party, said an independent commission would now investigate corruption in the football federation (PZPN) rather than the administrator of the federation who had been put in place by Poland's national Olympic committee.

Drzewiecki and the PZPN reached the agreement on Monday after FIFA had earlier given Polish officials a deadline to reinstate football federation (PZPN) officials suspended by the temporary administrator.

Poland's leading newspapers called the compromise a defeat for the minister.

"Drzewiecki loses by knockout," said the Gazeta Wyborcza, reminding readers that only last Friday Polish Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, had rejected any idea of compromise with the PZPN and FIFA.

"Poland's government has capitulated after a one-week standoff with the PZPN," said the paper.

The Rzeczpospolita newspaper described the deal as an "embarrassment" for the sports minister.

Poland may have maintained its right to co-host Euro 2012 with Ukraine but rejuvenation of Polish football won't continue, it said.

Poland faced the prospect of sanctions - including being stripped of co-hosting Euro - if it did not bow to FIFA's demand to reinstate the PZPN leadership.

The suspension of the PZPN officials followed a motion from the sports ministry, which wants to clamp down on corruption in Polish football.

Polish football has been plagued by corruption in recent years, with more than 20 clubs, referees, federations, club officials and players allegedly involved in match fixing.
