German with Double Arm Transplant Feels Fine

Karl Merk, 54, lost his arms six years ago in a farming accident. But the medicine has evolved so much that he received his both arms back. He was the first world case for double arm transplant and on Wednesday he was very surprised that the surgery went on so well and that appeared to be very successful.

Merk told the Associated Press that "it was really overwhelming when” he saw he had his arms back again. The 54-year-old man was wearing a black shirt which showed from where his arms had been cut. "These are my arms, and I'm not giving them away again," he said during his rehabilitation at Munich University Clinic.

He had been through a 15-hour surgery and he has to remain at the clinic three months from now on. Doctors said he recovers very well and can also turn on/off the lights and open the door. Christoph Hoehnke, one of the doctors who made the surgery, said that their “wildest expectations have pretty much been fulfilled.”

Nearly 40 surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses and other support staff were in the surgery room on July 25-26 during the arm transplant. Merk had lost his hands just below the shoulder, but the doctors said that the nerves are growing again in the arms even if it could take up to five years before he starts using his hands normally.

He is now going through a complex rehabilitation including physiotherapy, electric stimulation and psychological counseling, but he can’t wait to arrive back home.
