A suicide bomber detonated a large amount of explosives hidden in a truck inside a military camp on the outskirts of Lakhdaria on Wednesday, killing ten people and wounding 35 more, media and security officials informed. The truck entered the army post during morning hours as groups of personnel arrived at the site, located about 48 miles south-east of capital Algiers. Initial reports from the region said eight people have been killed, but two more soldiers died at the hospital due to severe injuries sustained. Authorities expect the death toll to rise because of the intensity of the explosion and large number of persons present. This is the bloodies attack in the past three months, the previous one occurring in Algiers where 30 people died and more than 200 were injured. No terrorist faction claimed Wednesday’s attack yet, but past bombings were the act of al-Qaeda Organization in the Islamic Maghreb, previously known as the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC). Security was tightened throughout the region and especially near the country’s capital, Blida and Boumerdes, towns which currently host sporting events part of the All-Africa Games. Supplementary checkpoints and security forces were deployed in order to ensure a safe evolution of the competition that gather athletes from 52 countries.
