At least five people were killed Monday in Ethiopia
by explosions, as the country celebrates the end of the Derg regime.
The incidents occurred in the eastern part regions. A grenade
exploded during a commemoration ceremony, attended a large number of people in
Degah Bur. Meanwhile an powerful explosion rocked the city of Jijiga,
the capital of Ogaden and also targeted a crowd.
According to reports, at least five people were killed and
dozens wounded by the attacks blamed on the Ogaden National Liberation Front, a
separatist rebel group that fights for the separation of Ogaden from Ethiopia.
The militant group is responsible for most of the attacks that
take place in eastern Ethiopia,
the last one killing 74 people working for a Chinese company with activities in
the oil field.
On this day, Ethiopians celebrated the ousting of the military
junta Derg and its leader Mengistu Haile Mariam. The extremist leader was
convicted to life in prison in January 2007 for genocide, after a trial that
lasted more than a decade.
During the civil conflict and the “Red Terror” Mengistu
ordered the execution of thousands, most of them young people, partisans of the
country’s future regime Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front.
