Comedy Central just announced new programming for its 2007/2008 season, aiming to keep up with the onslaught of new shows coming up on the major networks. The development plans, announced Tuesday, include pilots from Jamie Tarses and former "Saturday Night Live" head writer T. Sean Shannon.
Jamie Tarses, the daughter of television writer Jay Tarses, was head of ABC's entertainment division from 1996 to 1999. Tarses is a consultant for Studio 60. When she was senior VP of primetime series for NBC, she had a major role in developing Friends and Wings. Jamie Tarses is co-producer of My Boys, the comedy television show about a female sports reporter, which premiered on TBS cable television network on Tuesday, November 28, 2006.
The Tarses show, for which a pilot has already been ordered, is titled "Held Up." According to Variety, the show will focus on a bank robbery conducted by criminals who dress up as pop-culture characters and take a male teller hostage. This teller will be the main character and will likely be played by an experienced actor said programming boss Lauren Corrao.
"We think this show can be a character comedy the way 'The Office' is a character comedy," she said.
According to Comedy Central, some of the other new working titles are "Larry The Cable Guy." "Night Writer," "Root Of All Evil," "The Jokoy Project," "David Allen Grier's Chocolate News," and "The Watch List."
Executive VP of Original Programming, Lauren Corrao, states "We've been on a great run and are looking to continue our success with more original, creative and provocative programming in the coming year."
"David Allen Grier's Chocolate News" will try to cash in on the success of "Chappelle's Show," with Grier as the studio host communicating with faux field reporters who will investigate "outrageous pop-culture topics."
