The PR battle
has already started, although Dunnington is still being developed at the
moment. Thanks to a presentation authored by Sun Microsystems, we have found
out a few more details about Dunnington, Intel’s upcoming six cores
microprocessor. The “leaked” presentation has the merit to shed the necessary light
on Intel’s revolutionary microprocessor, so that we can already put Dunnington
on the list with things we want for Christmas.
The popular chip
maker had previously hinted that Dunnington might have four cores or more, but
the company had never mentioned exactly how many cores the new chip would have
and whether it would re-use Intel’s multi-chip module technology of cramming
several different chips into one powerful package. But now, the mystery is
over, as sources familiar with Intel’s interesting project confirmed that Sun
Microsystems’ leaked presentation was accurate. Dunnington will be a microprocessor
featuring all its six cores on a single chip.
But, the
presentation offers even more surprising details about Intel’s plans for the
future; it seems that the chip maker has also plans to launch the Nehalem generation
of chips later this year. These next generation chips will come with an
integrated memory controller and point-to-point interconnectivity between their
cores.
When asked about
all these hot details, Intel’s spokesman Nick Knupffer declined to comment on
Dunnington, but said that "Nehalem is on track and a screamer, but we're
not going to comment further."
