Florida Teacher Fired, Accused of “Wizardry”

A former substitute teacher in Land O' Lakes, Fla., claims he was fired by the school district because he was “accused of wizardry,” the United Press International reports.

According to Jim Piculas, Pat Sinclair, who is in charge of substitute teachers for the Pasco County School District, called him to say the district would no longer be using his services after he performed a disappearing-toothpick magic trick while teaching at Rushe Middle School. “She said, ‘You've been accused of wizardry,’” Piculas said.

Assistant Superintendent Renalia DuBose denied Piculas’ allegations and said the district never used the word “wizardry” in its dealing with Piculas. DuBose added the magic trick was far down the list of the reasons the substitute teacher is not being asked back. It appears that the district stated in a letter that Piculas did not follow lesson plans, allowed students to use computers even though he was told not to by another teacher, and left a student in charge during his fifth-period class.

Piculas claims “that was embellished after the fact to try to cover what initially they were saying to me…I still have no idea what my discipline involves because I’ve never received anything from the school district actually saying what entailed,” he explained, quoted by WLTX.com. The former teacher expressed his concerns regarding the issue, claiming the incident might prevent him from getting jobs in the future.
