China urged banks to reserve higher sums, as a consequence of the fact that deposits accelerated after inflation, reaching the fastest pace since 1996. As a prompt response to this call, China’s central bank announced on Monday that it would raise the reserve requirement ration for commercial banks by 0.5 percentage point, so that the rising inflation be curbed.

"The rise is aimed at strengthening liquidity management in the banking system and steering bank credits to grow reasonably," the People's Bank of China said in a statement.

Consumer prices rose 8.5 percent in April from a year earlier driven by food costs that hit 22.1 percent in April, National Statistics Bureau said today.
