Nearly 70 homes were destroyed by wildfires that razed
through Palm Bay in Florida, the Associated Press reports.
Investigators are looking at arson as a possible angle since the fire appeared
to have originated from several points.
“Everytime I turn around another house is on fire. We don’t
have enough resources on our own to do a job like this,” Palm Bay spokeswoman Yvonne Martinez said.
Firefighters in the Brevard
County town of Palm Bay spent more than 48 hours battling
the state’s biggest blaze, which scorched 3,500 acres. “It’s going to be
challenging to get the fire under control,” Palm Bay Assistant Fire Chief Jim
Stables declared.
One of the firefighters was shocked by an electrical line in
Palm Bay, while
the other three were wounded. However, no other details regarding their current
state were released.
Hundreds of residents were forced to leave their homes and evacuate the region
as Governor Charlie Crist declared a state of emergency and a 34-mile
stretch of Interstate 95 in Brevard
County and a portion of
U.S. Highway 1 was closed in the area. All 18 schools in Palm Bay, including charter schools, will be
closed Tuesday.
The wildfires burst out within 18 hours Sunday and formed a
ring around the city. Strangely, most fires started near roads. “Somebody was
very busy,” said Palm Bay Fire Marshal Mike Couture.
