NVIDIA Launches GeForce GTX 260 / 280

On Monday, Nvidia presented its new GeForce GTX 200 graphics processors, which will be made available later on this month.

According to Nvidia officials, with the GeForce GTX 200, gamers will experience a 50 percent speed increase, when comparing the new processor's performance to that of the GeForce 8800 Ultra GPU. This processor is currently the fastest chip one could possibly purchase.

The GTX 200 will make its debut with the GeForce GTX 260 (packing 896MB) for the price of $399 and with the GeForce GTX 280 (with 1GB of RAM) for $649.

Although it may seem like a lot to most people, real gamers know how much the new product is worth quality-wise. A good graphics card brings a much more consistent gaming improvement than a high-end CPU for instance.

However, the GTX 280 can be used in numerous other activities apart from games. It is great for accelerating video playback, encoding, as well as for scientific processing.

At the beginning of June, the company launched its Tegra chip series, designed for small devices such as laptops or netbooks. The Tegra chip was designed to minimize power; 720p video playback can go to up to 30 hours. The new line’s future generations will be extended battery life-oriented as well and will continue to keep idle power consumption under the 10 milliwatts mark.
