Surfers Attack Paparazzi Who Were Taking Pictures of Matthew McConaughey

A 29-year-old photojournalist trying to photograph and videotape actor Matthew McConaughey at the beach Saturday told police that he was attacked by a group of surfers who threw his camera in the ocean and stuck him.

The paparazzo from Santa Monica told sheriff’s deputies that the group of surfers approached him and other paparazzi about 2 p.m. Saturday and demanded them stop taking pictures and filming. The incident happened near Paradise Cove in Malibu.

“They formed a semicircle in front of his camera and they said they didn't want him to film,” said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department spokesman Steve Whitmore, according to Los Angeles Times. “They got into an argument, and he indicated that he received injuries. . . . [They] took the video camera and threw it in the water.”

Police said no arrests have been made. McConaughey was not involved in the attack, authorities said.

Whitmore said detectives are investigating the melee, which was caught on tape by TMZ.com and X17online.com. The video shows a group of young men in swimsuits approaching and yelling at a group of paparazzi. One person of the group of apparent paparazzi appears to argue with the surfers. He says the beach is public property and they have the right to be there. The video shows two men chasing a paparazzi, dragging him into the water and kicking him.

A surfer shouts at a photographer: “Get a real job.” The photographer says, “This is a real job. What do you do?” “I just drink beer and party” the man replies.

Paparazzi are not journalists
By Mark, (2008-06-23 20:22)
Maybe at one time they qualified, but real journalists don't instigate the news. The videos appearing on TMZ and other sites have been edited to present the paps in the best light, and even then they don't come off as sympathetic figures. If you watch one of the clips, it looks like the paparazzi took the first swing, hitting a kid in the head with his tripod.

Here in Los Angeles, the paparazzi are becoming a safety issue, trampling and pushing bystanders in their rush to get their shot. They scream and shout obscenities in public (in front of ordinary families) to get reactions from celebrities. They cause automobile accidents as they chase celebs trying to flee their attentions.

So it shouldn't come as a surprise that surfers, notoriously protective of their turf, are butting heads with the paps. And there are two interesting facts about this case: 1) The clips are edited (as I noted), and 2) The original videos are being withheld from the police.
