More than 100 stars have been invited to join
the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, including “Borat” star Sacha
Baron Cohen, French Oscar winner Marion Cotillard, who won the best-actress Oscar
in February for her role in “La Vie En Rose,” Ruby Dee, Jet Li, Josh Brolin,
Allison Janney, Ray Winstone, Jason Reitman, a best-director nominee for last
year’s “Juno” and Diabolo Cody, the writer of the film, who won the original
screen-play Oscar.
Cohen was nominated last year for writing “Borat:
Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan.”
Ruby Dee was a supporting-actress nominee for
last year’s “American Gangster.”
Other notable names include: Doug Liman (“The
Bourne Identity”), Kimberly Peirce (“Boys Don’t Cry”) and Gore Verbinski (“The
Pirates of the Caribbean” movies); writers Judd Apatow (“The 40-Year-Old Virgin”),
Jeff Nathanson (“Catch Me If You Can”) and Tamara Jenkins (“The Savages”); and
animators Ash Brannon (“Surf’s Up”) and David Silverman (“The Simpsons Movie”),
the Associated Press noted.
“These individuals are all incredibly
talented and a credit to the world of filmmaking. They exemplify the high
standards of the Academy and I welcome each and every one of them to our ranks,”
Academy President Sid Ganis said in a statement. The Academy of Motion Pictures
Arts and Sciences has almost 6,000 voting
members.
