Wildfires Take Over California

Goleta, California, caught fire on Friday. Los Padres National Forest burnt down and officials had to evacuate the residents who were living in the canyon. Goleta is located at about 8 miles northwest Santa Barbara and this weekend, because of the dry thunderstorms, the place turned into flames.

Authorities evacuated the area as fast as they could, because the fire had spread very quickly. On Tuesday, hundreds of firefighters were trying to stop the fire but officials grew concerned that the wind would send smoke billowing into the valley, which is surrounded on three sides by mountains.

The firefighters tried to stop the blazes burning from the western edge of the Sierra Nevada to coastal mountains near Big Sur. Still, winds were pushing the fire down a slope toward houses in the Glen Annie and La Patera canyons. The fire has burned 50 acres of heavy bush in the foothills of the Santa Ynez Mountains.

The Basin and Gallery have destroyed 16 houses and burned 26,763 acres in Monterey County and the Indian fire west of King City has destroyed 10 buildings and burned more than 59,700 acres.

Another important problem was that the fire carried tiny particles of soot (triggering asthma and other respiratory problems) in the state’s farm country. Some doctors there reported waiting rooms crowded with patients who were breathing heavily.

Fortunately, in the San Francisco Bay Area, the air quality has finally returned to healthy levels.
