British rocker Ozzy Osbourne and his famous family are
coming back on U.S. television in a new prime-variety show which they will host
for the Fox network.
Although an exact date has not been decided on yet, a
spokesman for the network said on Monday that the show, which will include
musical performances as well as comedy sketches, is scheduled for the upcoming
2008-2009 season, Reuters reports.
The fans of variety classics hosted in the 1970s, such as
the shows "Sonny and Cher" and "Donny and Marie" will
probably be surprised to see such a show hosted by Ozzy Osbourne, his wife
Sharon and his children Kelly, 23, and Jack, 22. The family became known all
over the world, even by people who were not fans of “Black Sabbath,” Ozzy’s
former band, for their controversial MTV reality show “The Osbournes.”
The new variety show will be executive produced by James
Sunderland, the one who also produced the NBC talent competition show
“America’s Got Talent,” with Sharon Osbourne as one of the competition’s
judges.
The production company which supports the colourful family’s
prime-time variety hour is FreemantleMedia North America, the same studio that
makes “America’s Got Talent” on NBC and “American Idol” on Fox.
Several major networks fought to get the Osbourne’s show,
but Fox was eventually chosen by Ozzy’s family, because it seems that Sharon
Osbourne and Fox’s alternative programming president, Mike Darnell, had similar
visions for the series, Variety said. Fox has ordered six hour-long episodes so
far.
The series are supposed to be similar to variety shows of
long ago and include musical performances by the Osbournes and their guests.
There will also be comedy sketches and a game show.
FreemantleMedia executive Eugene Young said the show would
also focus simply on the family members’ personalities, therefore it “would tap
into what the Osbournes do best, which is be themselves.”
