Bomb Attack on Indian Embassy in Kabul

A bomb attack in Kabul killed nearly 40 people and wounded 141 others, on Monday, July 7. The explosion happened near the Indian Embassy and left serious damages.

Dozens of bodies were thrown on the tree-lined streets in front of the embassy. The blast ripped through a crowd of people waiting in line for visas at the Indian Embassy in Kabul. Nine police officers and embassy guards were among the dead.

Local hospitals were on alert on Monday morning. 21 wounded people and four killed were on the hospitals lists at Kabul’s Emergency Hospital. The explosion also damaged dozens of cars and many nearby shops, as the sound of it could be heard from miles away.

It seems that the blast’s target wasn’t the nearby ministry headquarters, but the Indian diplomatic mission, as the authorities noticed after the smoke began to dissipate.

The bombing at the embassy was the second serious attack against a government target in the center of Kabul this year. In April, an assassination attempt on President Hamid Karzai happened during a parade. The incident killed three people, but Karzai was unharmed.

The Interior Ministry discovered that Monday’s attack was carried out with the help of Pakistan’s intelligence service, although Pakistani Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani said that they didn’t have anything to do with the incident.
