Although “The Cleaner” might apparently suggest the story of
a person whose job is to scrub dirty floors, the new A&E drama series
starting Tuesday evening at 10 portrays William Banks, played by Benjamin
Bratt, as God’s so-called missionary.
At first the plot may seem a bit far-fetched. However, the
series is based on the real-life story of Warren Boyd, a former drug addict and
current intervention professional, who gets a co-executive producer credit for
the drama.
The main character is a former heroin addict who decided to
cut his habit on the day his second child was born. While his wife was
delivering their baby, William made a deal with God and promised to help other
people drop their addictions if he was lent a heavenly hand as well.
Inexplicably, William found the strength and power he needed in order to get
over his dependency and kept the promise he had made to Divinity.
Banks becomes an “extreme interventionist” and, with the aid
of a team of people that share his past situation, he tries to cure several
addicts and send them to rehab. No matter what bad habits people have, the
small crew will do their best in order to save them from problems with drugs,
alcohol and gambling to sex and anorexia issues.
William’s aides in the series, ex-addicts who still need
lessons on making friends and changing other individuals, add a little salt and
pepper to the fresh A&E drama. Akani Cuesta (Grace Park) is a tremendous
joker, Arnie Swenton (Esteban Powell) is the buzz-master, and Darnell McDowell
(Kevin Michael Richardson) is one of the most expressive “cleaners.”
The leading actor, Benjamin Bratt, showed himself very
excited about his new and complex role and said he “found the script to be
fresh and edgy and authentic to the world and the subject matter that it was
trying to depict.”
