Two months ago the well known singer Prince has threatened to sue YouTube and other Web sites for using his music unauthorized, shocking the public opinion, but firstly his fans, who think that his reaction is a sign of greed..
It is now their turn to be the victims of Prince’s obsession towards the use of his image and work. He has reportedly served legal notice to fan web sites, which asks them to remove all of his images, lyrics and anything that is connected to him or his work, such as fans' photographs of Prince-inspired tattoos and vehicles displaying Prince-inspired license plates.
The fans have pledged to fight against the type of censorship that Prince makes use of, uniting under the banner “Prince Fans United” and being ready to take the matter to court if the singer would make it necessary.
They have declared that his actions are a violation of freedom of speech, making a public statement on the three sites, housequake.com, princefans.com and prince.org.
However, a statement made by the company that is helping Prince controlling his image has said that the fans’ declarations are not true and that Prince is not suing them.
They declared that the singer tries to take action against phony sites that exploit both the artist and the fans. Also, the statement reports that Prince will not take any legal actions against his fans and he is not attempting to violate their freedom of speech, but actually he wants to provide them with exclusive music and images free of charge.
In response, the fans still believe that the singer is very greedy and selfish, being unable to accept any negative critics at his regard.
Prince, author of “Purple Rain” and “Sign O’ The Times” albums, is known for his unusual approach on music and marketing, but due to his late reactions toward his fans he is likely to loose a big part of them.
