Airlines Reject Transporting Little Sick Girl

The Courier-Journal reported that this weekend, two airlines refused to fly a 5-year-old girl and her mother, invoking the reason that her condition was too instable to be on board. The little Kentucky girl suffers from a fatal rare disease and needed to receive stem cell treatments at a hospital in Beijing.

Hailey Goranflo and her mom, Miranda, had to board on a plane from Canada to China, in order to attend the operation. However, the two airlines, Air China and Air Canada decided during a layover that Hailey was “too sick” to face an air flight.

After receiving treatments in order to calm her convulsions at a Vancouver hospital, the little girl and her mother were constrained to return home, to Shepherdsville, Kentucky.

Miranda Goranflo expressed her shock when she heard the news and told the Courier-Journal from Vancouver that she disagreed with the fact that her daughter was unable to fly. She could not believe the fact that she had come to this point and was now forced to take it all over again. Hailey’s parents raised approximately $78,000 in order to operate their daughter in China, since the procedure is not available in the U.S.

Both Hailey and her 3-year-old brother suffer from a terminal malady named Late Infantile Batten Disease. This illness causes serious damages such as seizures and convulsions, dementia and sightlessness. Most of the patients who have this disease do not pull it through over the age of 12.

According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, the syndrome occurs only in an estimated 2 to 4 of every 100,000 live births in the United States.

If there is any chance to safe the childs life why does any other air company not transport the girl and her mom to China ? If it is about to really safe the girls life why is that complicated for the chinese doctors to travel to North Amerika ? No visa for Chinese? Hello that case is urgent its about one life !!!! Bireaucracy should stop to be that complicated at least for urgent cases like saving childrens LIFES !!!

It is truly unfortunate that the child was unable to fly, however, for the airlines to not allow a traveler to continue a flight indicates that perhaps they were truly unfit to fly. I understand the mothers desperation to save her child but sometimes it is not meant to be. Frankly, why is this procedure not available anywhere in North America, it seems a little bit too desperate. The family ends up paying a lot of money for a false sense of hope. This is not about Air Canada or Air China, it is about a disease the quite frankly has no solution.

I am sure that the executives and employees at Air Canada and Air China felt genuine grief for having to abandon plans to fly the girl and her mother.
However, doesn't accepting a passenger imply your ability to deliver them safely - especially since they had prior knowledge of the girl's condition? Had there been a tragic circumstance on board I imagine the lawyers would suddenly appear and the airlines would be embroiled in legal battles.
I feel sad for this family but it is a sad fact of today that you can't perform heroic deeds without putting yourself in the line of fire.

To be fair, the mother would likely have turned around and sued the airlines if anything had happened to her daughter while on board. It's an unfortunate situation, but the airlines are screwed either way- bad publicity vs. lawsuits.

Shame on you Canada: Air Canada: Air China.

You decide to let a child die for ignorant corporate policies.

Shame on Canada? Maybe shame on Air China and Air Canada but shame on Canada, the fact that she was flying through Canada was a mere coincidence and to say shame on Canada is a suprisingly ignorant statement? Where might you hail from thy righteous one? Do they not have rules and regulations where you are? Shame on you.
Where was the US in all this?

I think every one here is missing a VITAL POINT. Hailey is American not Canadian. The United States should be Taking Care of Flying her on a SPECIAL AIRLIFT ANGEL OF MERCY FLIGHT TO CHINA. My heart goes out to her and her family. I have been disabled from birth and have been thru many hardships and yes many medical air flights.
