Asia Shaken by Two Powerful Earthquakes on Thursday
Two powerful earthquakes frightened Asia on Thursday. This has led the officials and the residents to fear for a tsunami that lapped the northern coast of Japan and harmed Indonesia too. The most powerful earthquake had a 7 magnitude on Richter scale and hit off Japan’s main island, Hokkaido, at a depth of nearly 12 miles. 35 minutes later, a 4-inch tsunami threatened the shores but left no damages.

A police spokesman in Hokkaido, Yukio Yoshida, said that “there was some light shaking, but it was nothing major.” 125 miles of Tokyo, in the city of Ofunato in Iwate Prefecture, nearly 10,600 residents were temporarily advised to evacuate their homes and to stay as far as possible from the beaches.

An hour after the first earthquake happened, another one shook northeastern Indonesia. This was a 6.6 magnitude one and struck 55 miles beneath the Molucca Sea, according to the Associated Press. The shakes weren’t related even if they happened on the same tectonic plate, as the local officials stated.

The residents in Maluku capital of Ternate quickly evacuated their homes after a tsunami alert was issued all over the radios and television. The city of Ternate was closer to the epicenter and that was what scared the residents. Still, the big wave didn’t arrive and damage wasn’t announced either.

Benyamin Otte told the Associated Press that he ran out of the hotel accompanied by other guests and they “fled to high ground.” Otte also added that he “could see people on the beach, checking to see if there were any signs of a tsunami, but everything looked normal. Within a half hour, we were heading back down."

Indonesia and Japan are both situated on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” which is an arc of volcanoes that circle the Pacific Basin.
