Movie Review: “The Secret Life of Bees”

August, May and June are three beekeeper sisters who live in the small South Carolina town. August makes such a sweet honey that she manages to gather people from all around to stock it. Well, “The Secret Life of Bees” sounds like a fairytale and it might be. Good things and bad things mix together to create a sweet and delicate movie, making you dream about a nice bedtime story.

Lily Owens is the 14-year-old main character, played by Dakota Fanning. At the beginning of the movie, Lily’s mother drops death killed by a mysterious gun. T. Ray is Lily’s abusive father (Paul Bettany) whom she didn’t reach to call Daddy. Having such a life, Lily’s protector is the family’s housekeeper, Rosaleen (Jennifer Hudson).

In the end, the two decide to run away from home and reach to a big pink house. The house is the headquarters of a honey company and Lily feels attracted to all that honey and the bees. Suddenly, something special and profound wakes up inside her.

August Boatwright is the queen of the headquarters, who decides that Rosaleen and Lily could stay with them, in spite of her sister’s June disapproval. And that is how director Gina Prince-Bythewood creates a lovely story, both for adults and children. The movie stars Queen Latifah, Dakota Fanning, Jennifer Hudson, Alicia Keys, Sophie Okonedo and Paul Bettany and will have its premiere at Bay Area theaters.
