A new application for the iPhone and the iPod Touch is now
available for download through the App Store. The app’s name is Night Stand and
it is an alarm manager, but it certainly has that Apple style.
The application has been developed by SpoonJuice and it
promises to do its best to wake you up in the morning. In what style concerns,
Night Stand will not let you down, as the developers took care and bundled
several color schemes and themes in the application.
By default, the entire screen will display an old-style flip
clock theme in black and white. Nevertheless, if you rather feel more into the
digital era, you can also choose a digital clock with green, blue or red
numbers.
There are several options you can play with in the app. For
instance, you can choose what kind of information you want on the screen. This way,
the style-conscious user might want a simple, uncluttered display, while the
geek in every iPhone user might urge them to go for date and second display.
There is also a 24-hours time display option.
The application also proves to be very functional and
non-intrusive, as it can seamlessly run in the background, may you do something
else on your iPhone before you sleep.
The most important part of the application, the actual alarm manager,
has many functions, but some users might miss some features.
As this is no dull application, you can choose between ten
alarm sounds, from the classics to a scary woman’s scream. A very nice touch of
the alarm manager is a sort of anti-snooze feature. While on most smartphones,
you eventually end up pressing the snooze button right when the alarm ruins
your sleep, Night Stand will ask you to solve a simple math equation in order
to leave you alone.
Nevertheless, some reviewers pointed out that this feature
is as ineffective as it is ingenious. This is because you can always press the
Home button, which silences the app in the background unable to convince you to
wake up.
If that might seem just a minor inconvenience, this one
might actually put you off getting the app. The issue is that the application
will fail to initiate the alarm as soon as your iPhone goes to sleep. This
leaves you with two options. First, you might consider keeping the iPhone plugged
in to the mains all night. Second, you could also set the iPhone not to go to
sleep at all, but this thing will drain a bit more power from your battery.
Overall, Night Stand is a compelling digital alternative to
your old alarm clock. Even though it has its drawbacks and it has no support
for managing multiple alarms, this app looks like a nice software gadget.
