It seems that from now on, it will be a pleasure to commute.
Or at least this is the goal of introducing the new PATH
cars starting with the end of this year. The cars are meant to be more
comfortable for the commuters, and the long term target is to curb the
transport by personal cars, in order to alleviate the environmental effect of
car gas emissions.
The new PATH cars will feature a lot of gadgets to improve
the quality of every journey. There will be more poles to hold on to, thus
small accidents and crowd will be avoided. There will be three doors instead of
two, in order to eliminate crowd at getting in or out of the train. Moreover,
there will be four sets of two video monitors on each car that display news,
weather and sports programs and announcements from WNBC.
The video system appears to be a really good investment, as
General Electric owned NBC paid around $15 million to install the monitors, and
the Port Authority of New York and New
Jersey that runs the train system had nothing to pay.
The replacement of the 45-year old cars will begin at the
end of the year, and it is part of a 10-year investment worth $3.3 billion in
the train system. There are 340 cars now waiting for their high-tech peers to
take their place, and the change will feature an addition of no less than 119
new cars. Ready to travel?
