Nokia Welcomes Spike Lee Aboard

Filmmaker Spike Lee has teamed up with Nokia in a project that consists in making a movie composed of cell phone footage recorded by regular people. The film will be made up of three acts; each of them will have a certain theme that will be made public online in due time, so that cell phone users would have four weeks to record and send their work. 25 submissions will then be chosen by Nokia, people everywhere will be able to vote online and a top ten will result. Out of the ten winners, Spike Lee will pick out one submission for each of the three acts.

"You are seeing first hand the democratization of film," said Lee in a statement on Thursday. "Aspiring filmmakers no longer have to go to film school to make great work. With a simple mobile phone, almost anyone can now become a filmmaker."

Participants can submit their material, which has to be 100% original, in any combination of text, music, images, and video starting today. Five contestants will be randomly selected from each act and will receive a Nokia N95 and a free trip to the movie's Los Angeles premiere.

Spike Lee is a very renowned director and has received two Academy Award nominations, for best original screenplay in 1990 ("Do the Right Thing") and for best documentary in 1998 ("4 Little Girls").
