Son of "Godfather" Writer Sues Paramount
Anthony Puzo, son of writer Mario Puzo who created “Godfather,” sued Paramount Pictures on Wednesday, alleging that the studio sold the rights to make a video game based on the book and award-winning movie without handing over revenues.

As a representative of his father’s estate, Anthony Puzo filed the suit in Los Angeles Superior Court and, according to court documents, he is claiming $1 million in damages plus interest and attorneys fees.

This came after Paramount licensed video game company Electronic Arts in 2006 to develop and distribute a game based on the characters and story lines of the 1972 “Godfather”. In 1973, the film was awarded the Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Screenplay and Best Actor (Marlon Brando), leading Paramount on to producing two sequels.

As the court documents indicate, Paramount, a Viacom Inc. unit, and Mario Puzo agreed to give the writer a substantial share of any audio-visual products sold or rented containing the elements of “Godfather” saga.

The agreement came as an outcome of a dispute that occurred between Puzo and the motion picture production and distribution company in 1992. The same documents indicate that Paramount purchased the rights for an extremely low price because Mario Puzo was a “young, relatively unknown author, struggling to support his family”.

Puzo died at the age of 78, in 1999, leaving his estate to his children.
