Compound in Red Wine Slows Aging, Prevents Cardiovascular Diseases

A new Harvard study initiated by David Sinclair of Harvard Medical School and Rafael de Cabo of the National Institute of aging shows that resveratrol, a compound found in grapes and red wine provides heart benefits, preventing cardiovascular diseases, reducing heart inflammation, enabling stronger bones and preventing eye cataracts. The substance has the effect of an activator for more than 1,000 genes affecting the heart. The function of these genes changes as a person ages but the resveratrol helps the genes to work the same way they do in a younger heart.

Tests in mice found that the cholesterol was significantly reduced after 10 months of treatment, the aortas of mice treated with resveratrol functioned significantly better compared to the one of the untreated mice, the compound also moderated inflammation in the heart, resveratrol treatment reduced cataract formation in 30-month-old mice. But most mice didn’t end up living longer because they don’t usually die as a result of heart disease and they don’t suffer from weakening bones.

“From a health point of view, the quality of life of these mice at the end of their days is much better. It suggests that resveratrol may extend productive, independent life, rather than just extending life span,” Dr de Cabo said. “We found that while quality of life improved with resveratrol, the compound did not significantly affect overall survival or maximum lifespan.”

Although the findings indicate that grapes don’t help you live longer, resveratrol treatment may reduce the risk for age-associated disease and stress, extending “productive independent life” and it might help the elderly stay hale and hearty. Resveratrol is also found in the crust of peanuts and walnuts.

Resveratrol boosted my athletic performance
By senior athlete, (2008-07-04 18:14)
I just wanted to update you on what has transpired in my life since I began taking Bioforte & Transmax. I began taking Bioforte 2 months ago. After just 2 weeks I noticed that the authoritis in my ankle was much improved. My ankle use to hurt so much that I walked flat footed, and could not raise up on my toe on my right foot. Now I have full motion with so little pain that I can ignore the minor ache. I also made a real attempt to stop snacking between meals. I noticed that after beginning the Bioforte that I started to lose weight. My energy after 30 days improved noticeably. 4 months prior to starting Bioforte I had started to work out in the pool after a 40 year lay off. After the first month taking 2 Bioforte’s each day my body seemed to have much more energy. My times in the laps improved to where at age 64 I am now swimming at the same level as I did in competition when I was 18years old on the swim team in High school. On 6/21/08 I went to the Senior Olympics in Columbia Missouri. I enter 3 events, the 50yd, 100yd & 200yd Breast Stroke. I won all three. I also beat every other person in that event who were in the younger age groups. Later I discovered that I broke the Missouri State Records for the 60 to 64 age group. I will be 65 in 4 months and plan to go back next year to break the records for 65 to 69.
Resveratrol supplement buyer beware
By bioresearcher, (2008-07-04 18:09)
Since the Dr. Sinclair study was published in Nature a flood of dubious companies have sprung up selling resveratrol. One even makes his capsules in a rented house in Florida. Consumer Lab, an independent testing authority, evaluated the major brands and found many lacking in content and quality. The highest potency products that passed their evaluation were Biotivia, Transmax and Bioforte. A product by Life Extension Co. failed badly with only 26% of the claimed resveratrol. Another brand, Revatrol, had virtually no trans-resveratrol in its supplement. The ConsumerLab test results are available on their web site. According to the NIH formula for converting from mice to humans the correct dose based upon the published studies is between 400mg and 4,000mg for a 70 kg man. The consensus amongst researchers seems to be that around 1,000mg is appropriate for a preventative dose and twice that to treat an existing condition.
