Heparine Overdose Kills Texas Newborn
Seventeen babies at a Texas hospital had taken an overdose of the blood thinner drug. One has passed away, although it is not clear yet if heparin had a contribution in the infant’s death, reported CNN, which got the information from Corpus Christi Hospital officials. Nurses allegedly used 10,000 units of the medicine instead of 10, and the fatal error was spotted two days later.

The investigation was initiated by the hospital. It hasn’t been identified the role, if any, in the baby’s death because he was already seriously ill and receiving medical treatment in the neonatal intensive care unit before dying on Tuesday morning, said Dr, Richard Davis, the hospital’s head medical officer.

At this point, it is thought that the mistake took place Thursday, during a process for the IVs when pharmacy personnel mixed it with other solutions, including saline. Two employees have already agreed to left their positions, waiting for the outcome of the inquiry.

Apparently, blood thinner overdose hasn’t been at all a singular case in hospitals since the beginning of 2007. Throughout this period of time about 250 medical errors nationwide of this type were registered. One of them directly involved the twins of actor Denis Quaid, who were about to die after being given a shocking dose of blood thinner 1000 times higher than it was expected to.
