About 350 to 500 homes, mobiles homes and structures were affected by the flooding that hit New Mexico on Sunday morning. On Monday, there were already four or five unconfirmed missing people and two other people were swept by the angry waters of the river.
The waters didn’t withdraw until Monday, leaving no choice for the people than to leave their homes. 350 people were evacuated and nearly 500 vacationers in the area were forced to leave the place. Since Friday, there have been 9 inches of rain in the mountainous area of New Mexico.
Nine bridges were captured by the water, leaving no sight of them. Secondary roads remained closed, even if only U.S. 70 was reopened. Paradise Canyon Road was almost washed away.
The waters rose until they reached 11 feet high, washing away the banks of Rio Ruidoso and Carrizo Creek. Nearly 50 people were caught by the river, but were rescued by firefighters. Helping methods consisted of putting a ladder across the flood and walk people from a side to another, creating a false bridge.
Almost 180 people were rescued on Monday from the flood in the upper canyon. At least two homes from New Mexico were washed away as the river came out of its bed.
Even if the sun came out on Monday morning, other storms are forecasted during the weekend.
